So, you just hired a copywriter. Now what?

So, you just hired a copywriter.

Now what?

Well firstly, congratulations!

You just made the best business decision of your life.

Hopefully…

Let me explain.

Yes, hiring a copywriter is essential.

In my opinion.

And not just because I am one.

But, the difference between hiring the RIGHT copywriter and the WRONG one is enormous.

Like booking a hotel and getting a rat infested one instead of the gold water taps and 360° scenic views you thought you were promised.

Now, I’m guessing you want the golden taps of copywriters.

And not the rats and door hanging off its hinges kind of copywriters.

If so, then feel free to keep reading and see how to tell the difference.

  1. The copywriter you hire should have confidence.

I’m not talking “I’m the greatest copywriter alive” kind of confidence.

I mean confidence in their craft. In their passion for your business and in their determination to see your business level up. Your passion should be mirrored in them.

And speaking of passion,

  1. Your copywriter should ask lots of questions.

About your business. Your aims. Your KPIs. Your established TOV. Your MVV’s. Your target audience. (The list goes on.)

They’re not being nosey. They’re just on a mission to meet your expectations and give them back to you tenfold.

On the other hand, if your copywriter wants minimal information and “already has the perfect plan in mind” even before an initial chat, then maybe give them a wide berth.

  1. Your copywriter uses many of the established techniques.

The copywriter you hire should make butter out of words. They should know all the classics and then some.

  1. questions
  2. power of you
  3. bullet points
  4. imagery
  5. storytelling
  6. tone
  7. benefits over features
  8. show don’t tell
  9. The list goes on…

Regardless of whether you can recognise these techniques in the copy written for you, if it gives you all the warm and fuzzies – then they’ve got the right techniques down pat.

  1. They have green flag qualities

Just like on any first date, your copywriter should give you all the green light signals.

  • reliable
  • dependable
  • adaptable
  • understanding
  • accommodating
  • honest
  • *Insert your green flag emotion here*

If your copywriter isn’t your vibe, you are fully justified in saying goodbye.

No likey, no lighty.

I had to.

And finally.

  1. You get what you pay for.

Yes, it’s annoying but true.

Unfortunately, good copywriters are not found in Poundland.

But, if you do find one there?

Even if it’s for £3 instead of £1.

Just walk away.

Please.

It’s not worth it!

A good copywriter is an investment.

But your return on investment potential will be the real eye-waterer.

So, there you have it.

5 ways to ensure your copywriter gets the go-ahead.

The 5 thumbs up.

Now, go and find your copywriter bestie.

And light up the business world!

*wipes away an errant tear*

So proud.
